NYS TAX ALERT: IF YOU OWE $10,000 OR MORE IN BACK

TAXES TO NYS YOU MAY FACE LOSING YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE!

In a press release issued by NYS Governor Cuomo this week it was announced that NYS has begun sending 60 day notices to 16,000 NYS residents who are listed as owing $10,000 or more in back taxes (whom Cuomo kindly calls SCOFFLAWS) stipulating that unless back taxes are paid in full, or acceptable installment payment arrangement are made, the Department of Motor Vehicles will suspend their driver license immediately until such time as the tax debt is paid in full. The names of these persons is being published by NYS with copies sent to the media who are publishing the names of NY residents owing the greatest amounts of taxes.

So far 4,000 letters have gone out this month with the remaining 12,000 scheduled to be mailed before the end of August, 2013. As the announcement does not specify the nature of taxes falling under this program, it can only be assumed at this point that this includes not only personal income taxes but business taxes for which owners and officers (person's with fiduciary responsibility) such as sales and payroll taxes, including penalties and interest which are often disputable, once NYS comes after the person upon whom the tax and penalty assessment is imposed.

With computer generated penalties, sometimes issued in error, it is not hard to exceed the $10,000 threshold. So if you owe $10,000 or more in back taxes and don't have an installment plan in effect get one now before you receive a notice. If you get a notice don't ignore it or it may cost you your driving rights. If you need assistance you can contact me for more information. Remember, this is real and the worst thing you can do is ignore it.

Should you require assistance contact us immediately through this website and someone will reply within 48 hours.
